Big Boi feat. T.I. & Khujo – Tangerine

Last Monday I brought you 7 posts with 21 different songs…I’m aiming for more this week.  To start off Mo Music Mo Monday I have Tangerine by Big Boi.  Really liking this track with Big Boi’s beat to this one, has that southern chill vibe to it.  Been liking a lot of Big Boi’s singles over the past few months, it’s good he doesn’t need Andre 3000 to make a track.

A relatively new name to the rap game, the Def Jam artist that hails from Mississippi delivers 22 tracks (3 bonus tracks) of honest and diverse lyrics over polished soulful production, all of which he handles.

Big K.R.I.T’s delivery is similar to the late Pimp C of U.G.K. His influence is clearly evident on the banger “Country Shit”. This track along with “Return of 4eva” and “Just Touched Down” is packed with southern 808s that knock

One of his more known tracks is “Hometown Hero”. This track is definitely a classic, featuring the famous Friday Night Lights scene where Boobie Miles refuses to lift with the rest of his team. “Viktorious” is another great track. Over a piano heavy beat, K.R.I.T discusses how every southern state has had its run except for his home of Mississippi.

On songs like “They Got US”, “Children of the World” and “Small as a Giant”, K.R.I.T’s exposes his lyrical complexity. We see a more socio-political side of the southern MC.  On “They Got Us”, K.R.I.T displays his storytelling skills, rapping about the lives of three individuals who have taken a turn for the worse.

With a  few guest appearances, one of the highlights is New Orleans rapper Curren$y who is featured on 2 tracks in “No Wheaties” along with Smoke DZA and “Glass House” with Wiz Khalifa.  Curren$y blesses both of these tracks with verses that go perfect with K.R.I.T’s types of beats.

Some other tracks that stand out are: “Good Enough”, “2000 and Beyond” and one of the bonus tracks, one of my favorites, “Now or Neva”.

Overall, K.R.I.T Wuz Here is a great mixtape, actually sounding more like an album than mixtape.  From the lyrics to the subject matter to the production, K.R.I.T brings a fresh approach to southern hip hop while still incorporating the bright spots of the south that we have come to known in the form of U.G.K and Outkast. This is one of the more rare mixtapes that can be listened from beginning to end without skipping any tracks.

If this project is any indication of K.R.I.T’s future, then he is definitely heading in the right direction. His lyrical versatility as well as delivery over his self-produced soulful and smooth southern beats are able to capture the attention of any listener.

I definitely will be looking out for Big K.R.I.T’s future projects.
